We went to the PADI website and it was a very well designed beautiful website. What this company does is offer Professional Scuba Diving Courses. These course start at the beginning level which can be taken online up to the most advanced certifications.

The cost for the PADI Online Open Water Diver Course is $120. 00 and is non refundable. This fee covers training and knowledge development and gives you access to the Open Water Diver Manual which is their online course textbook. You can get all the bookwork done online. But before you get officially certified, you will need to go to your local PADI Dive Center or Resort. Once you get there, you will need to pay additional fees and complete the rest if your certification requirements in the ocean.

You will also need to bring a Diving Mask, Snorkel, a good set of Diving Fins and you’re also responsible for all of your own Diving Equipment. If you are unsure of what you need to bring with you I’d recommend dropping by your local PADI Dive Center and ask them before you go out and purchase a bunch of equipment for your Dive. There are plenty of scuba diving classes being offered in New York. If you’re thinking of taking one, you might want to know several requirements first. Before going to scuba diving class, make sure you have the following:

Interest - while classes can be completed in a few days, training and getting a certification will require some homework. Most diving schools in New York require their students to complete assignments that include reading materials, videos and exams. If you don’t have the interest, you might just give up and waste your time and money.

Scuba diving gear - you could rent, of course. But if you want to make scuba diving a regular part of your recreation, better get the gear first. This is not a requirement, however. Most schools only require the students to bring a mask, snorkel and fins. They provide the rest of the gear.

Money - scuba diving classes are quite inexpensive and usually start at $250, which includes class and pool training and dive gear use. Most course materials aren’t included in the fees.

Swimming skills - you need to be in reasonably good health and be a competent enough swimmer. Some trainings include floating and treading time and swimming 200 or 400 yards in a pool.

“You can’t tell me you didn’t have fun!” John, the ship’s captain yelled over at me after he heard the story from the other divers.

I knew I had. But, it got a little hairy down there.

It seems that there was a huge 9,000 lbs. fishing net deposited miles off the Florida Keys. A diver had spotted it one day on a dive and was a little perturbed at all the marine life he found caught in the net. So, he put together a nice expedition that included quite a bit of volunteer divers. It was a nice little SCUBA package.

I was lucky enough to hear about the expedition and hopped on board as soon as I got the chance. Our job was to dive down and cut the net. We were supposed to tie up pieces of the net on air bags so they could be taken to the surface and placed on the boat.

Oh, it was a great time and it was for a good cause. But, there were some scary moments I have to admit. There was absolutely no visibility when we started cutting the net. Particles from the net started floating around and little bite size creatures started swimming everywhere.

With no visibility, I found myself in quite a situation as I felt the net start to rise. It seems that the others had already fastened their air bags and were ready to deploy the net without me. 300 lbs. of net had been cut in half an hour and rising to the surface.

Little did I know, I was actually inside the net instead of on the outside where everyone else was in the clear. I looked around and saw quite a bit of bones and skulls. The other divers were looking at me and I was a bit spooked. There was a whole shark caught in the net. I backed out quietly and was soon back on the other side of the net.

We couldn’t stay down much longer. My Aeris SCUBA Equipment Computer Package was telling me that. One trip per day was all we got. It took us several days to finish the task and get the last piece of net. You’d be surprised what else you find in the ocean.

It’s not a pretty sight when you see everyone’s garbage just hanging around in the ocean. I wish people cared more. The ocean is a beautiful place. The trash only takes that away from us who love to dive.

Nine years of residence and travel in the Philippines have produced the conviction that in discussions of the ethnology of Malaysia, and particularly of the Philippines, the Negrito element has been slighted. Much has been made of the “Indonesian” theory and far too much of pre-Spanish Chinese influence, but the result to the physical types found in the Philippines of the constant absorption of the Negrito race into the Malayan and the wide prevalence of Negrito blood in all classes of islanders has been generally overlooked.

The object of this paper is to present some physical measurements of the Negrito and then of several other pagan peoples of the islands whose types, as determined by measurement and observation, reveal the presence of Negrito blood.

The physical measurements here given were taken by me at various times between 1901 and 1909. They were taken according to the methods of Topinard (Éléments d’Anthropologie Générale) and are discussed in accordance with his system of nomenclature.

The first Negritos measured are members of a little community on the south slope of Mount Mariveles in the province of Bataan. They are of a markedly pure type. While it is usual to find Negrito communities considerably affected by Malayan blood, in this case I doubt if there is more than a single individual who is not of pure Negrito race. Nine men and ten women, all adults, practically the entire grown population of this group, were measured. Although this is a small number, the surprising uniformity of characteristics in all practically assures us that in these individuals we have the normal, pure type of Negrito, which may be used as a standard for comparison with other peoples.

Equipment required for diving:

The mask:

Diving masks are designed to create a pocket of air so the diver may be able to see. The human eye is not designed to see through water so it is essential to have a diving mask.

A good diving mask is like a very large pair of swimming goggles. It has a silicone seal with a picket/seal for the nose to prevent the diver inadvertently breathing through the nose and sucking in water. A good diving mask is designed to withstand great pressure underwater and is an essential piece of scuba diving equipment.

The Fins:

Any physical exercise requires a lot of energy. Swimming is no exception. To fuel that energy the diver requires oxygen. Divers need to conserve energy in the best possible way. Fins are used to help conserve energy and help the diver to swim more effortlessly underwater.

Fins are large flexible blades that are fitted to the feet. These provide maximum propulsion through the water and make swimming a lot easier.

There are two types of fins:

The shoe fin fits onto the bare foot like a slipper. Strap fins will have a foot pocket with a strap that fits around the heel and are worn with boots.

Protective clothing requirements:

Regardless of the weather, protective clothing is required to protect the human body from harm. The skin suit is used in the warmest water. It protects the body from cuts either from equipment or from brushing against corals and rocks.

The wet suit will provide some thermal protection. They come in long or short arms and legs and are available in a range of thicknesses.

Wets suits are made of neoprene. This material allows water to flush through it, holding it against the body. This allows the body to warm and provides defense against cooler water temperatures.

The semi-dry suit is similar to a wet suit except it has seals around the neck, wrists and ankles. It is designed to ingress trapped water and is warmed by the body. It gives greater protection than the wet suit.

And finally, the dry suit is designed for cold water diving conditions. This suit does not allow any water to ingress. Inside the suit the body remains dry. The suit has built-in boots and is sealed around the wrists and neck.

The dry suit is either made from neoprene or from a trilaminate membrane. In addition, neoprene gloves and hoods are added for extra warmth. Dry suits are usually part of the scuba diving equipment used by more experienced divers.
